Aerial footage is the shot most couples ask for and the one most likely to be quietly dropped on the day. Not because it is difficult to fly, but because where and when it is permitted is more restricted than most people expect.
Regulations change and this is a general overview. Your videographer should confirm the position for your specific venue, and any operator should be able to evidence their registration and insurance.
What it actually adds
Used well, aerial does one thing no other shot can: it shows where you are. The coastline the venue sits on, the scale of the landscape, the two of you small in a place you chose deliberately.
Used badly it is a slow orbit over a car park. The test is whether the location is part of why you are marrying there — if it is, aerial earns its place; if the day is really about the room and the people, it does not.

Where it is restricted
Cyprus applies the European drone framework, under which operators must be registered and pilots must hold competency appropriate to the flight. Beyond that, restrictions apply around airports and military installations, and in certain protected or built-up areas.
For weddings this matters in three common situations: venues near an airport flight path, chapels and sites with heritage protection, and any flight over a gathering of people — which a wedding is by definition. Flying directly above your assembled guests is generally not permitted, whatever you may have seen elsewhere.
Questions to ask before booking
- Are you a registered drone operator, and what pilot competency do you hold?
- Does your insurance explicitly cover drone operations?
- Have you checked the airspace for this specific venue?
- Who obtains permission if the venue or site requires it?
- What is the plan if conditions on the day make flying unsafe?
That last one matters more than couples realise. Wind at a coastal venue frequently grounds a drone, and a film that depended on aerial then has a hole in it.
The practical answer
Treat aerial as a bonus rather than a foundation. A film built to work without it, which gains a beautiful establishing sequence when conditions allow, is the right way round. See what to ask before booking for the wider set of questions.
