The proposal
Charis wanted the sea, the sunset and no witnesses — or at least, none that Niki could see. The plan was a picnic on the shore below the cliffs at Polis, late in the day, with the light going down over the water. Our job was to be there without being there.
The northwest coast makes this easier than most of Cyprus. It faces the sunset, the cliffs give you height to work from, and there is enough open ground that two people with cameras look like two people with cameras rather than a film crew. We took position early, framed what we needed, and waited.
Microphones were placed before they arrived. The sea is a gentler problem than a waterfall but a more constant one — it never stops, and wind coming off the water will ruin a recording that looked fine on the meter. Hidden radio mics close to the picnic, wind protection on everything, and a backup running from the moment we pressed record.
The drone was the part we thought hardest about. A drone is not a subtle object, and nothing announces “you are being filmed” quite like one arriving overhead.
Then we walked over, which never gets old. There is the moment they say yes, and then a second moment a few seconds later when they realise there is a camera, and that they will be able to watch this back whenever they want.

Filmed from three angles at once. No direction, no retakes, nothing you can ask for twice.

Up over the cliffs and out across the bay, once the secret no longer needed keeping.

Filming a proposal on the coast at Polis
Polis sits on the northwest coast, with Latchi harbour along the shore and the Akamas peninsula beyond it. For filming, the direction matters more than anything: this coast faces west, so the sun goes down into the sea rather than behind a hill, and you get a long, forgiving golden hour instead of the abrupt cut-off you find on the south coast. If you are choosing where in Cyprus to propose at sunset, this stretch is genuinely the best of it.
Two technical problems, both solvable if you plan for them. Sea and wind are constant, low and everywhere, and they eat dialogue — so microphones go close to the couple, everything gets wind protection, and a second recorder runs as insurance. And a drone is loud. If it is up before the question, the surprise is over. We plan the aerials around the moment rather than through it: either high and distant beforehand, or held on the ground until the answer is yes and it no longer matters.
Worth knowing if you are planning something here: much of the Akamas is protected, and drone flying is restricted in parts of it. Check before you plan a shot around aerials rather than after. The shoreline itself is uneven in places, so if a picnic on the rocks is the idea, walk it first in the shoes you intend to wear.
