The day

Jessica got ready at a villa near the Tomb of the Kings, in a house that was already full by mid-morning — bridesmaids, family, music on, nobody sitting still. That atmosphere can’t be manufactured, and it doesn’t survive being directed, so we filmed it loosely and took the photographs in the gaps.

Ben was getting ready at home, and the mood there was the opposite: him and his brother, unhurried, laughing at things nobody outside that room would find funny. Two houses, two completely different mornings, and the film is better for having both in it.

The ceremony was in his mother’s garden, a few minutes away. It’s a green, enclosed, obviously well-tended garden, and there’s something about a family home that a venue can’t replicate — everyone was already comfortable, nobody was on their best behaviour, and the emotion arrived early and stayed. [One moment — a vow, a reading, who cried first.]

Then on to 7 St Georges. The trio played through the early evening and the food came the way it comes there — no menu, dish after dish, for as long as anyone could keep going. The speeches ran to laughter and tears in roughly equal measure, which is exactly what you want when you’re filming three angles and hoping the reactions land.
