So you are getting married and dealing with wedding planners, vendors, venues, hotels, travel agents and a ton more people who all have questions and opinions that will influence the outcome of your wedding. A good wedding planner will deal with most of these vendors but even then, there are decisions that only you can make as they reflect your life, your style and simply just you and your partner. Thats why it’s super important that you ask all the right questions when choosing vendors and this is of course also true for your wedding videographer.
Frequently Asked Questions!
Lets first look at the most asked questions and why they are important, and ill add some bonus question in at the end that are also super important and most people dont ask.
- Whats your Videography Style? Probably the most important question when choosing a wedding videographer. Here are some current styles often used:
- Cinematic: Think of this as a movie trailer, usually with some emotional music, parts of vows or speeches, slow motion, story telling focused on emotions. A great video to share with friends, family and on social media which will be mostly watched in its full length.
- Documentary: This is a chronological capture of the day, from getting ready to the last dance, details of the couple and guests are captured. This is a great option if you want to relive the whole experience or shared it with the kids and grandkids in the future.
- Story Telling: Think of this as your love story on film, with personal elements such as interviews from guest and family. It is a blend of Cinematic Story telling heavily driven by audio, vows and toasts.
- Music Video Style: This of this as a highlight reel set to music, a fast-paced, energetic video with soundtrack, short and shareable.
- Content Creator: A vertical capture of the day, can be in multiple shorts or a longer edit. Usually recorded on an iPhone with an instant instagramable look. This is often an add-on to another video style.
- How many hours coverage do we get? This is important if you want to capture specific moments of the day, we highly recommend coverage from bridal prep to the first dance as a minimum. Anything extra is a bonus.
- Whats included in your packages? Most wedding videographers work with packages, packages tend to offer different coverage and results. This can range from the time covered during the day, the number of videographers and the length of the final video edit.
- When will we get the final video? Destination Wedding Videographers tend to shoot videos during the season and edit on calm or off days. Combined with shooting 30-40 weddings in each season, this means you usually have to wait for your final video. It can take anywhere from 2 to 6 months depending on the videographer. If you want your video faster, ask if there is a fast delivery option.
- Can we choose the Music? Cinematography is an art-form, and if you have chosen a videographer with a specific style, chances are you liked their previous videos and want something in their unique style. There is also the issue of Copyrights, charts or famous songs tend to have restrictions on social media and can sometimes totally loose the audio or can even be subject of litigation in extreme cases. This is why videographers use licensed music, discuss the style you like with the videographer in advanced so they can find something that matches your expectations.
- Will we get the raw footage? In the videography world, this is a big no-no for multiple reasons. Raw footage can often be in what is called a log format, a log format has no colour and has a very low contrast, it needs to be professionally edited before it looks stunning. Raw footage is often long, uncut, shaky, has out of focus moments, waiting time and might have private conversations during waiting time that were never meant to make it to the final edit. There are other reasons, for example a wedding shoot raw footage can often be within the hundreds of gigabytes of footage.
- What is your price and deposit policy? You want to make sure this is clear from the get-go, the last thing you want is to pay a deposit before the date is confirmed and booked, this can cause cancellation fees.
Bonus Questions!
These are questions that separate the pro’s from Amateurs
- What’s your backup plan if equipment fails or you get sick? Professional videographers have backup equipment always on standby and can in emergencies call upon colleagues with the same style/quality to cover your wedding.
- How do you handle low light situations? Low light can be an issue for video, so you need to make sure lights are setup if needed. But then again, the lights need to be small and not take up space or overpower the natural lighting.
- Can we review the video before the final edit? Most videographers offer revisions to the final video, this means making small changes removing or adding scenes you want to change. Its important to note, that revision doesn’t mean a full re-edit.
- Do you deliver versions optimised for social media or mobile? Videographers tend to record in a 16:9 or wider ratio, these ratios are meant for horizontal viewing, if you want vertical cuts, ensure you mention it from the begin as it will change the framing for each shot.
Choosing the right wedding videographer isn’t just about ticking boxes, it’s about finding someone who understands your story and can bring it to life in a way that feels authentic to you. The questions above aren’t just practical; they’re designed to help you connect with someone whose style, approach, and personality align with your vision.
At the end of the day, you won’t remember every detail but with the right videographer, you’ll relive the emotion, the energy, and the magic of your day for years to come.
